The Port of Los Angeles handled 814,574 TEUs of cargo in October, marking the busiest month ever at a Western Hemisphere container port, according to data from the American Association of Port Authorities.
The Southern California port said October box volumes were 15.6 percent higher than in October 2015.
Loaded imports in October reached 417,311 TEUs, while loaded exports during the month totaled 166,406 TEUs, year-over-year increases of 16.4 percent and 23.3 percent, respectively.
Meanwhile, empty containers comprised the remaining 230,857 TEUs handled at the port during the month.
“It’s encouraging to see that when cargo surges, we have the infrastructure, equipment and human capital to keep the boxes moving,” Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka said.
Overall, the port is frequented by 24 liner services, 23 of which are fully cellular container services and one of which operates with pure car/truck carriers, according to data from BlueWater Reporting’s port dashboard tool.
