The Viau Terminal at the Port of Montreal will increase the port’s container-handling capacity by 600,000 TEUs once both phases of construction are completed.
Construction has officially began at the Port of Montreal to build Viau Terminal. The terminal will undergo two phases of construction.
The first phase, which is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2016, will increase the Port of Montreal’s container-handling capacity by 350,000 TEUs.
The second phase will increase container-handling capacity by an additional 250,000 TEUs, said Logistec Corporation, the parent company of Termont Montreal Inc., which will operate the Viau Terminal.
Termont will invest around $42 million in new equipment at the terminal over a two-year period. Investments will include two ship-to-shore post-Panamax cranes, five rubber-tire gantry cranes, six reach stackers, electrically-powered reefer stations, tractors, trailers and lifters, Logistec Corporation said.
Viau Terminal will also have on-terminal rail operations.
Termont already operates the Maisonneuve Terminal at the Port of Montreal. The terminal operator signed an agreement with Mediterranean Shipping Co. in 2006 to handle the majority of the ocean carrier’s business at the port.
“The expansion of Termont (Viau) will further reinforce MSC’s commitment to Canada, and serve our partners in business for years to come,” MSC said in a statement.
