Port of New York/New Jersey handles record number of containers in August

The largest port on the U.S. East Coast also handled increased numbers of vehicles and saw intermodal rail traffic increase during the month.

   The Port of New York and New Jersey handled a record 574,547 TEUs in August 2015, an 8.7 percent increase over the 528,581 TEUs handled in August 2014.
   August cargo was bolstered by a 5.2 percent increase in import loaded containers, according to a statement from the port.
   During August, the number of vehicles handled in the port rose by 17.5 percent year-over-year to 42,908.
   The number of containers shipped via the Port Authority’s ExpressRail system also grew by 5.9 percent, from 42,995 containers in August 2014 to 45,533 containers in August 2015.
