Port of New York/New Jersey sets monthly container volume record

The port also also handled a record number of container lifts at its intermodal ExpressRail yards in July, according to the latest figures from the port authority.

   The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s container terminals handled 588,918 TEUs of loaded and empty containers in July 2015, 14.1 percent more than the 516,244 TEUs it handled in July 2014.
   The authority said the total lifts set a new monthly record for the port.
   Loaded import containers totaled 295,865 TEUs in July 2015, 11.1 percent more than in July 2014, while loaded export containers totaled 120,736 TEUs last month, up just 0.4 percent from July last year.
   The port saw a big increase in the number of empty containers it handled: 172,317 TEU in July 2015, 32.9 percent more than in the same 2014 period.
   New York/New Jersey also handled a record number of container lifts at its intermodal ExpressRail yards in July with 46,892 containers of all sizes, 9 percent more than in July 2014.
   The port handled 39,288 automobiles in July, down 1.7 percent compared to 2014. However, autos are up 25 percent for the year.
   In the first seven months of 2015, the port has handled a total of 3,682,707 TEUs, 13.5 percent more than in the same 2014 period.
