Port of NY/NJ box volumes rise 8.3% in January

The largest port on the U.S. East Coast handled 517,668 TEUs of containerized cargo in January 2017, a new monthly record, according to the most recent figures from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

The Port of New York and New Jersey handled 517,668 TEUs in January 2017, an 8.3 percent increase from the previous year and a new monthly record.

   The Port of New York and New Jersey handled 517,668 TEUs of containerized cargo in January 2017, an 8.3 percent increase from the same 2016 period and a new monthly record, according to the most recent figures from the port authority.
   Throughput of loaded imports grew 5.5 percent to 149,757 containers for the month, while loaded exports jumped 8 percent to 61,740 containers compared with the previous January. Exports of empty containers increased 14.6 percent year-over-year to 83,731 containers.
   The port authority’s ExpressRail system also set a new monthly record in January, handling 43,408 containers, a 10.3 percent increase from January 2016.
   Auto volumes at the port shot up 41.5 percent to 49,097 units compared with the previous year.
