PORT OF SAVANNAH POSTS RECORD AUGUST FOR CONTAINERS
The Georgia Ports Authority's port of Savannah moved a record 117,357 TEUs through its terminals in August, a 24-percent increase over August 2001.
The August record follows a strong July, in which Savannah handled 108,558 TEUs, up 16.4 percent over July 2001. For the two-month period, container tonnage is up 25.3 percent.
Doug J. Marchand, the ports authority's executive director, credits thee growing volumes on growing trade with the Far East and the influx of large-scale retailers who have located import distribution warehouses near the port in Savannah.
