Port of Virginia posts second busiest month ever for box cargo

The Port of Virginia experienced its second busiest month ever in November for container volumes, handling 236,155 TEUs.

The Port of Virginia handled 236,155 TEUs in November, a 16 percent increase from a year prior and the second busiest month in the port’s history, the Virginia Port Authority (VPA) said Friday.
Compared to last November, rail units for the month increased 35 percent, truck volumes rose 8 percent, Virginia inland port volumes inched up 3 percent and volumes at the Richmond Marine Terminal surged 20 percent.
Looking ahead, VPA CEO and Executive Director John F. Reinhart said that the focus “will be maintaining momentum” as the port gets underway with the expansion of the Virginia International Gateway later this month and at Norfolk International Terminals late next spring. These two projects combined will increase the port’s annual throughput capacity by 40 percent when complete.
