The port posted a 2.4 percent year-over-year increase in container volumes in April, partially supported by growth at the Virginia Inland Port and Richmond Marine Terminal.
The Port of Virginia handled 215,254 TEUs in April, a 2.4 percent increase from April 2015.
The increase was partially supported by growth at the Virginia Inland Port (VIP) and Richmond Marine Terminal (RMT), the port said.
“The importance of those facilities is going to continue to elevate,” Port of Virginia CEO and Executive Director John F. Reinhart said. “Our port-wide reinvestment strategy is well underway. In Richmond, we unveiled a new mobile harbor crane in February. Last week, we applied for a federal grant that would enhance our cargo handling capabilities at VIP.”
Looking ahead, the port will rebuild the upland operation at the South Berth of Norfolk International Terminals. The $350 million project will increase NIT’s annual throughput capacity by 46 percent. Overall, the Port of Virginia is equipped with six terminals and offers berths up to 50 feet. Two Class-1 railroads – CSX and Norfolk Southern – serve the mid-Atlantic port.
