Rotterdam’s TEUs, tonnage up in first quarter

The Port of Rotterdam put aside industrial action during the first quarter to record a 10 percent increase in container traffic to 2.54 million TEUs.

   The Dutch port, Europe’s busiest, estimated that strike action by SMIT tug workers, which saw a number of ships diverted to nearby ports, costing it about 70,000 TEUs.

   In the first three months of 2007, Rotterdam’s total traffic for all types of commodities went up 5.7 percent to 98 million tons. Liquid bulk cargo was up 5.2 percent to 45.7 million tons, dry bulk cargo was down marginally at 20.7 million tons, while general cargo rose 11.1 percent to 31.7 million tons.
