SABRETECH CONVICTED IN VALUEJET CRASH; WORKERS CLEARED
A Miami jury found jet maintenance company SabreTech guilty of eight
criminal counts of hazardous materials violations in the 1996 crash of ValueJet Flight
592.
In its verdict Monday, the jury cleared SabreTech of charges of
conspiracy, making false statements and willfully violating hazardous
materials regulations. The jury also acquitted two former SabreTech
employees of all charges.
SabreTech handled the oxygen canisters that were believed to have
started the fire that caused the jet to crash into the Florida Everglades,
killing 110 people.
Each of the eight counts carries a penalty of up to $500,000, or up to
$4.5 million for the now-defunct company.
