SCHENKER EXPANDS FINLAND/RUSSIA OPERATIONS

   Schenker has opened a 14,500-square-meter facility in Kouvola, Finland, which increased the company’s warehousing space in the market to more than 40,000 square meters.

   Schenker’s facility is located next to a new container rail depot that handles cargo moves to Russia. Finland and Russia have the same rail gauge and shipments can be loaded on to Russian railcars at Schenker’s Finnish warehouse.

   “The transit business to Russia is very lively at present,” the Essen, Germany-based company said. “The Russian economy has developed positively, and structural changes, for example in the company and customs legislation, favor the utilization of the safe route via Finland.”

   Schenker’s warehousing service in Kouvola include cross-docking and various added-value services, such as labeling, attaching manuals, converting DVD players to Russian standards.
