Scholarship renamed for Crowley executive Simpson

The Containerization & Intermodal Institute has renamed its annual scholarship in honor of Richard A. Simpson, its former president and chairman.

Simpson, who died in January, was a well-known leader in many facets of international transportation, especially during his quarter-century at Crowley Maritime Corp.

'It is fitting to honor Dick's work by renaming the CII Scholarship the Richard A. Simpson Scholarship,' said Joseph Cervenak, CII president.

'Dick was the driving force behind CII's commitment to providing financial aid to deserving students interested in entering our industry, and it is more than appropriate that we honor his memory with the renaming of our scholarship for him,' he added.

The scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving midshipman at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, N.Y.

It was in 1992 while Simpson was vice president of Crowley Maritime and president of CII that he convinced the organization to initiate the scholarship program.

'In keeping with our education mission, CII expects to announce enhanced scholarship opportunities in the near future,' Cervenak said.
