The independent containership owner and manager agreed to purchase KVH Industries’ mini-VSAT Broadband 2.0 maritime communications solution for 18 of its newest vessels.
Seaspan Corporation, a large owner of containerships that charters vessels to liner companies, selected in-motion satellite TV and communications systems solutions provider KVH Industries’ mini-VSAT Broadband 2.0 maritime communications solution for 18 of its newest vessels, KVH said.
The maritime communications solution includes KVH’s global TracPhone V11-IP satellite communications system, mini-VSAT Broadband connectivity, IP-MobileCast content delivery service and CommBox network management tools. The TracPhone V11-IP is a 1.1-meter antenna that accesses both the C- and Ku-band satellites of KVH’s mini-VSAT Broadband network. It provides global coverage with download speeds up to 4 megabytes per second.
The network management capabilities built into the TracPhone V11-IP’s Integrated CommBox Modem are used for onboard IT functions to optimize and manage web and email traffic.
The IP-MobileCast content delivery service allows crew members on the subscribing vessels to enjoy national and international newspaper editions, movies and television shows.
In 2016, additional Seaspan vessels are expected to implement the mini-VSAT Broadband 2.0 solution. Other vessels in Seaspan’s fleet already use KVH services including Videotel’s maritime training and KVH Media Group’s news and movie services.
Videotel is a KVH company that specializes in the production of training materials for the maritime industry. KVH’s other company, KVH Media Group, provides commercially licensed news, entertainment and training content for the maritime, retail and hospitality industries.
