Expansion work at the Port of Liverpool’s Liverpool2 container terminal was initiated on Friday, Peel Ports Group, the owner of the United Kingdom port, announced.
Expansion work at the Port of Liverpool’s Liverpool2 container terminal was initiated on Friday, according to Peel Ports Group, the owner of the United Kingdom port.
This latest phase will include the installation of a further three ship-to-shore cranes (STS) and 10 cantilever rail-mounted gantry cranes (CRMG). These will add to the previous five STS cranes and 12 CRMG cranes installed during Phase 1 which was opened in November last year, Peel Ports said.
Liverpool2 will have the capacity to handle the unloading of two 380-meter vessels at the same time.
Peel Ports said the expansion will also include additional refrigerated container plugs.
Started in November 2016, Liverpool2 represents a £400 million ($520 million) investment. The deep-water facility is capable of handling the world’s largest containerships and connects road, rail and canal networks linking directly to the U.K. heartland.
“This is an important step in the development of Liverpool2 and reflects our confidence and our long term commitment to positioning the North of England as a competitive route to international markets and a major port for global trade,” Mark Whitworth, CEO of Peel Ports, said in a statement.
Phase 2 of the Liverpool2 development will be completed in 2019.
