Shearman & Sterling snags Panama Canal work

The Panama Canal Authority has selected New York-based Shearman & Sterling as its international legal advisor for its financing needs as it expands the waterway.

The authority said the law firm will help it and its financial advisor, Mizuho Corporate Bank, to determine the most advantageous financing options.

Chicago’s Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw LLP, has been selected to advise the authority about the procurement and contracting aspects of the project, which by adding a third set of locks will double capacity and allow larger ships to transit the isthmus.

“Shearman & Sterling distinguishes itself as a market leader in infrastructure financing,” said Jorge Quijano, the authority’s engineering and programs management director, adding that the firm’s “project development and finance group enjoys a strong global reputation, especially in Latin America.'
