SHIP DELAYED AFTER RUNNING AGROUND IN NEWARK

The Hapag-Lloyd containership “Bonn Express,” has been delayed after a mechanical failure in the ship's steering mechanism caused it to run aground Friday in New York harbor.

A U.S. Coast Guard spokesman said the 2,800-TEU ship had not sailed Monday and was undergoing repairs.

The Bonn Express is one of 13 vessels in the Grand Alliance “PAX” weekly service connecting Europe via North America with Asia. The ship was leaving Port Newark for Halifax and Europe.

A spokesman for Hapag-Lloyd said a delay was necessary so that marine experts flown in from Germany could check that the ship was safe to sail.
