Ship explodes and sinks at Port Klang

A cargo ship loaded with chemicals and steel sank in explosive fashion Saturday evening in Malaysia’s biggest port.

The Malaysian-registered 68-meter long Ing Hua Fu No. 9 was being loaded with steel in Port Klang when its cargo hold caught fire and exploded, ripping apart the vessel’s bottom and causing it sink quickly.

As of Sunday, port officials were not sure what caused the blast and were checking the ship’s manifest. The vessel plies a coastal route between Malaysian ports. The vessel had arrived Saturday morning from Penang.

No one was hurt in the powerful blast and it did not disrupt other operations at Klang.
