Ship Finance acquires two 19,400-TEU ships

The vessels are chartered to “one of the world’s largest liner companies.”

Ship Finance International Limited (SFI) said on New Year’s Eve that it had “acquired two 2016-built 19,400-TEU container vessels and contracted the vessels until late 2033, or for nearly 15 years, to a leading container line on long-term bareboat charters.”
SFI did not identify the liner company, but Ole B. Hjertaker, chief executive officer, said, “This new acquisition broadens our relationship with one of the world’s largest liner companies.”
SFI says its fleet includes 45 liner ships and that it currently charters containerships to Maersk, MSC and Evergreen. Maersk said it was not the company chartering the ships; MSC declined comment. SFI’s website says MSC does charter two 19,200 TEU ships to MSC, MSC Viviana and MSC Anna. The MSC website lists those ships as having capacity of 19,368 TEU and 19,462 TEU respectively.
On Dec. 18, SFI also announced it had entered into lease-financing agreements totaling $270 million with an Asia-based institution to finance three 10,600-TEU container vessels acquired in 2018 and that those ships were are employed under long-term time charters to Maersk until 2024, with options to extend the charters by up to four additional years.
