The 26 rubber-tired gantry cranes carry a price tag of $46.4 million.
South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) said Wednesday it plans to buy 26 rubber-tired gantry (RTG) cranes from Finnish crane manufacturer Konecranes for $46.4 million.
The Wando Welch Terminal will receive 24 of the new RTGs to support the port authority’s plans to modernize operations and boost container yard capacity of its existing terminal facilities.
Inland Port Greer will receive the other two RTGs to support continued volumes growth at the facility, SCPA said.
Inland Port Greer opened in November 2013 and is SCPA’s first inland port. SCPA opened the second, Inland Port Dillon, last month.
Since the start of the calendar year, SCPA has handed 731,976 TEUs, down 1.4 percent from the corresponding 2017 period. However, SCPA’s container volumes for April ticked up 3.8 percent year-over-year to 196,439 TEUs, driven by a boost in loaded exports.
