STB raises penalty amounts for 2019

The Surface Transportation Board, which regulates U.S. domestic transportation providers, has slightly adjusted its penalties upward to reflect annual inflation.

   The Surface Transportation Board, which regulates railroads, marine carriers, freight forwarders and brokers, and pipeline carriers in the U.S. domestic trades, has raised its civil penalties for 2019.
   Under the 2015 Federal Civil Penalties Inflation Adjustment Act, federal agencies are obligated to annually adjust their penalty amounts to account for inflation.
   The STB penalty increases over the 2018 amounts range from about $10 to several thousand dollars, depending on the type of violation.
