Strait Shipping adding Napier to New Zealand coastal service

New Zealand shipping company Strait Shipping will next week extend its weekly coastal freight service to include the Port of Napier.

The 282-TEU vessel 'Kent' will from Jan. 29 connect Napier with Wellington, Nelson and Picton, predominantly moving containerized freight, but also breakbulk and roll-on/roll-off cargoes.

Strait Shipping said the additional call will be the first ever sea freight link between Nelson and Napier.

'New Zealand needs a truly intermodal transport system, and shipping provides a way forward that has low emissions, low carbon and is more fuel efficient than any other mode,' said Sheryl Ellison, Strait Shipping's managing director.

Strait Shipping operates two other vessels carrying passengers and freight between Picton and Wellington through its Bluebridge brand.
