The biggest container ships sailing on the oceans can carry more than 24,000 TEUs and are as tall as the Empire State Building.
Ocean carriers are deploying ever-larger box ships to drive down slot costs and emissions per unit. But they are sacrificing their own flexibility and are driving up costs for ports and truckers. Overall, the hoped-for benefits haven’t appeared and may even be a net negative, analysts say.
Evergreen has added a second and third ultra-large container ship to its China, Europe and Mediterranean service, adding around 6,000 TEU of capacity to the service per week.
