Teamsters sue three Oakland logistics firms

An Alameda County Teamsters union local has filed suit against three companies at the Port of Oakland for violating the city's living wage ordinance.

Teamsters Local 70 filed suit in California Superior Court last week against GSC Logistics, Duluth Services and Aerotek. The suit alleges that the three paid unlivable wages to workers loading and unloading containers in the firms' warehouses, in violation of the city law.

“The workers are the reason why the Port of Oakland is so productive and profitable,” Chuck Mack, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 70 and Teamsters Western Region Vice President told the Associated Press. “It’s outrageous that these companies think they can operate above the law. We have news for them — they cannot.”

The lawsuit asks the court to order the firms to cease violating the Oakland city law and to pay the employees unpaid wages and damages. Financial details were not disclosed.
