THURBER, PARTNER BUY STRACHAN SHIPPING AGENCY
Win Thurber, a former executive of the Inchcape Shipping agency, has
returned to the business by acquiring Strachan Shipping Agency in the U.S. for an
undisclosed price.
Strachan, founded in 1886, is a U.S. nation-wide agency with a strong
presence in the non-liner trades. Thurber said the company will remain based in Savannah
and will seek to develop its liner business as well as non-liner
activity.
Thurber and his partner, J. Schley Rutherford of Mobile, Ala., acquired
only the agency business of Strachan. They did not buy the stevedoring
unit, which remains under Strachan Shipping Co.
Thurber is a veteran of the agency business. He built Southern Steam
into a major agency that later became part of Inchcape. Inchcape’s parent
company, Inchcape plc, sold its agency business last year to Electra
Fleming, a London-based financial group.
