Trucking executive calls for improved port access

Dick Coyle, president of Devine Intermodal in West Sacramento, Calif., stressed a need for increased investment in ports to the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

'We have terminals up and down the Central Valley of California and our trucks haul processed food for export through the Port of Oakland, and we need improved access to those ports,' said Coyle, speaking at a “listening sessions” in Fresno Tuesday — one of several the T&I Committee is holding across the nation

The Port of Oakland is only accessible for a limited time each day, he said, 'forcing trucks into the congestion and trucks don't want to share the road with rush hour commuters.'

Coyle said that he and the American Trucking Associations favored increasing the fuel tax to pay for needed infrastructure and capacity improvements.

'On funding, if we have to pick our poison, raising diesel taxes is the fairest way to generate more revenue and it is certainly preferable to tolling,' he said.
