President Donald Trump has nominated Patrick J. Fuchs and Michelle A. Schultz to serve five-year terms as members on the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Surface Transportation Board (STB).
The STB’s primary purpose is to ensure competition among the nation’s freight railroads.
Fuchs currently serves as a senior staffer on the Senate Commerce Committee, with a focus on surface transportation and maritime issues. He has participated in the development of railroad legislation, including the first STB reauthorization since the agency’s creation in 1996. Before that, he worked in the White House Office of Management and Budget, where he managed rail and maritime regulatory issues.
Schultz serves as deputy general counsel to the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA), which she joined in 2006. Prior to that, she was an attorney with a Philadelphia law firm.
The board is authorized to have up to five board members.
Ann D. Begeman is currently serving as acting board chairman. She has been with the STB since May 2011 and started her second five-year term under the Obama administration on Dec. 9, 2016. Trump named her to acting STB chairman on Jan. 23, 2017.
