Trump to nominate Derek Kan as Under Secretary of USDOT

Currently general manager for ride-sharing firm Lyft in Southern California, Kan has also served on the board of directors for Amtrak since 2015, the White House said in a statement announcing his nomination to Under Secretary of Transportation for Policy.

President Donald Trump plans to nominate Derek Kan to the position of Under Secretary of Transportation for Policy, according to an official statement from the White House.
In the position, Kan would serve as a principal advisor to U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, who was confirmed by the Senate in late January.
The under secretary for policy, technically third in the department’s order of succession, is responsible for “generating proposals and providing advice regarding legislative and regulatory initiatives across all modes of transportation,” as well as coordinating budget and policy development within the department, according to the USDOT’s website.
Currently general manager for ride-sharing company Lyft in Southern California, Kan has also served on the board of directors for Amtrak since 2015. Prior to that, he was Director of Strategy at a startup in Silicon Valley and also worked as a management consultant at Bain & Company.
Earlier in his career, he served as a policy advisor to Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, who also happens to be Secretary Chao’s husband, and chief economist for the Senate Republican Policy Committee, as well as a presidential management fellow at the White House Office of Management and Budget.
