U.K. government approves Mersey Docks container terminal

The British government today approved the Mersey Docks and Harbour Co.’s proposed Seaforth River Container Terminal near the Port of Liverpool.

The riverside terminal will cover about 17 hectares, to be reclaimed from the River Mersey and the foreshore in front of the Royal Seaforth Dock in Bootle. The river berths would accommodate modern post-Panamax vessels, which are too large to gain access through the lock gates to the existing Seaforth container terminal.

Fully developed, the new terminal would be able to handle 500,000 TEUs, effectively doubling present capacity.

Mersey Docks is part of the Peel Group.
