U.S. CONTAINER WORKING GROUP PREPARES SECURITY RECOMMENDATIONS
A governmental group that has been tasked by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and U.S. Customs Service and to develop recommendations for ocean containers must submit its initial recommendations by Feb. 1st, DOT secretary Norman Mineta said.
Mineta, addressing the U.S. Conference of Mayors in Washington, said that the'Office of Homeland Security appointed the Container Working Group as the lead group on the issue of container security.
Mineta'said that containers merit security consideration'since they enter all modes of transportation.'”Containers are inherently intermodal,” he said. “They arrive by sea, by truck, by rail and by air — and our border security efforts require that all the modes of entry be covered.”
