U.S. intermodal grew 10% in 2004
The Association of American Railroads confirmed Thursday that a new record volume for intermodal units moved by rail was set in 2004, when 10.99 million intermodal loadings were moved in the United States, 10 percent more than in 2003.
“The top 28 highest volume intermodal weeks in history occurred in 2004, leading to full-year intermodal volume that broke the previous record (set in 2003) by more than 10 percent,” said Craig F. Rockey, vice president of the AAR.
U.S. freight railroads also reported that 2004 U.S. carloads totaled 17.4 million, up 3 percent.
“2004 was an excellent year for U.S. freight railroad traffic, with the vast majority of all major commodity categories experiencing significant gains,” the AAR said.
