The London Heathrow Airport and the Gatwick Airport both saw cargo volumes rise year-over-year in September as both airports have been pushing to gain the new runway that will be constructed in southeast England
The London Heathrow Airport and the Gatwick Airport both reported boosts in cargo throughput in September compared to a year prior.
The London Heathrow Airport said September cargo volumes surged 5.9 percent year-over-year to 126,109 metric tons, on the back of growth to East Asia and Latin America. On a rolling 12-month basis, the airport handled 1.5 million metric tons, up 1.2 percent from the same period a year earlier.
Meanwhile, the Gatwick Airport, which is just south of London, said cargo volumes in September soared 17.4 percent year-over-year to 6,608 metric tons. On a rolling 12-month basis, the airport handled 74,795 metric tons of cargo, a 2.2 percent drop from the corresponding period a year earlier.
Both airports have been pushing for a new runway and Reuters reported Monday that UK Prime Minister Theresa May will decide this month to either support plans for a new runway at the London Heathrow Airport or at the Gatwick Airport.
