UNITED SHIPPING & TECHNOLOGY SETS UP E-COMMERCE DIVISION
United Shipping & Technology, the large U.S.-based provider of same-day, time critical shipping delivery in North America, is setting up a division within its Corporate Express Delivery Systems subsidiary that will focus on e-commerce distribution in business-to-business and business-to-consumer market segments.
US&T said that it aims to become the “premier backbone transportation/ logistics solutions supplier” to the burgeoning number of e-commerce businesses across the U.S.
Peter Lytle, chairman and chief executive officer of the company, said that purchasing over the Internet is fast becoming mainstream. US&T has the infrastructure in place to respond to the explosive increase in demand for both business-to-business and business-to-consumer delivery, he added.
US&T has “sophisticated technology and information systems,” more than 10,000 vehicles and a network of more than 230 integrated facilities in North America, the company said.
Mark Johnson, vice president of business development, e-commerce, will head US&T’s e-commerce division.
The company cited industry estimates by Forrester Research which show that the number of incremental packages being added per day to the shipping stream as a result of e-commerce transactions is 650,000.
