UP derailment delays Chicago shipments
Union Pacific said the derailment of a freight train near Galt, Ill., on Tuesday will cause delays stretching into next week to all eastbound and westbound shipments into and out of Chicago.
According to “K” Line, UP’s Chicago intermodal terminals have been closed for receiving units both Wednesday and Thursday.
The train derailed 30 cars at approximately 5:30 PM CDT Tuesday, fouling both mainlines and severely damaging a bridge. Galt is located approximately 100 miles west of Chicago.
UP said it is in the process of building temporary tracks to move trains around the derailment site until the bridge can be restored to service. Bridge repairs are estimated at five or more days.
