UP to automate intermodal gate in Utah
Science Applications International Corp. will install an automated truck gate to improve efficiency and security at the Union Pacific’s intermodal rail yard in Salt Lake City, the San Diego-based systems integrator said.
The system combines optical character recognition to read equipment numbers and capture container images for damage assessments with fingerprint technology to identify drivers as they pull up to the booth. The information is automatically integrated and shared with the railroad’s terminal operating system.
SAIC has installed similar gate systems at UP yards in Memphis and Dallas.
