UPS opens healthcare-dedicated logistics facility in New Jersey

The Atlanta, Ga.-based shipping and logistics provider opened its first multi-client hub in its network to provide medical device companies comprehensive logistics services.

UPS opened a 208,000-square-foot healthcare-compliant distribution and warehousing facility in New Jersey as part of its long-term strategy to support medical device manufacturers and the growth of its customers.
The multi-client hub is the first in the company’s network to provide medical device companies comprehensive logistics services including instrument inspection and surgical set replenishment, autoclave capabilities and other services, UPS said in a statement.
The new healthcare-dedicated facility is strategically located near UPS’s air hub at Philadelphia International Airport.
In addition, it is fully integrated into the company’s transportation and field stocking location (FSL) network, which makes it possible for healthcare manufacturers and distributors to reach over 80 percent of hospitals in the United States within four hours. The company’s FSLs are centers designed to support warehousing and time-sensitive product distribution for patient services.
The announcement of the new center follows UPS’ acquisitions of various companies in the healthcare sector including Polish-based healthcare logistics company Poltraf, U.K.-based healthcare logistics company Polar Speed, Hungary-based pharmaceutical logistics company CEMELOG and Italy-based pharmaceutical logistics company Pieffe. In addition, UPS will open a new healthcare center in Roermond, the Netherlands, which it said earlier this year is scheduled for completion in Jan. 2016.
