UPS tops FedEx in 2007 rate increase

UPS said Friday it would raise rates for domestic ground, air express and U.S. origin international shipments an average of 4.9 percent, effective Jan. 1.

The Atlanta-based parcel delivery company said the base rate for its air express and international shipments will rise 6.9 percent, offset by a 2 percent reduction in the fuel surcharge, for a net average increase of 4.9 percent. The new rates as applied to specific products and regions will be posted on the UPS Web site on Dec. 1.

UPS rate increase is greater than one recently announced by competitor FedEx, which said it would raise express shipping rates 3.5 percent next year after subtracting 2 percent from the fuel surcharge.
