The 23,000-TEU ships, which are being built at Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering, are among the 20-ship order made by HMM last year.
Valmet will supply the scrubber systems for seven newbuild 23,000-TEU containerships operated by Korean shipping company Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM), the Finnish company announced Wednesday.
The deliveries of the scrubbers will begin this year for the ships, which are being built at Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering and are among the dozen 23,000-TEU capacity ships expected to be delivered to HMM by the second quarter of 2020. The order for the scrubbers was included in Valmet’s fourth-quarter 2018 orders received, but the value was not disclosed, the company said in a press release.
The delivery will include “tailor-made hybrid scrubbing systems for main engine and generator engines including auxiliary systems and automation,” Valmet said.
The 12 vessels were part of a 20-ship order by HMM in April 2018 for “eco-friendly containerships.” The order also included eight ships with capacities of 14,000 TEUs.
Last week, HMM signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a fund for scrubber installation. The 153.3 billion South Korean won ($135 million) fund includes 46 billion won invested by HMM, a loan of 62.3 billion won from the Korea Ocean Business Corp. and 45 billion won invested by five companies.
The shipping company also has installed scrubbers on two 11,000-TEU containerships, HMM Promise and HMM Blessing, which were delivered in August, and on five VLCCs.
