Walsh sworn in to head U.S. Commercial Service

Elizabeth Erin Walsh was sworn Thursday as the Commerce Department’s new assistant secretary for global markets and director general of the U.S. and Foreign Commercial Service.

   Elizabeth Erin Walsh was sworn Thursday as the Commerce Department’s new assistant secretary for global markets and director general of the U.S. and Foreign Commercial Service. 
   She will oversee a global network of U.S. trade promotion and policy staff located in 78 markets and 100 U.S. cities.
   The U.S. and Foreign Commercial Service (CS), a division of Commerce’s International Trade Administration, promotes U.S. exports, especially among small and midsized enterprises, protects U.S. commercial interests overseas, and attracts foreign direct investment into the United States. 
   In fiscal year 2016, the Commercial Service helped U.S. companies export more than $57 billion in goods and services, supporting more than 300,000 American jobs.
   Walsh brings more than 25 years of management experience to the Commerce Department, including more than a decade at the State Department, with international organizations and the private sector. Most recently, she served as an assistant to President Trump. Before that, she was an executive director at Goldman Sachs in Asia Pacific.
