WORLD AIR CARGO TRAFFIC FELL IN JANUARY

   World air cargo traffic fell 0.4 percent in January, to 4.41 million
metric tons, according to statistics published by Geneva-based Airports
Council International.
   North American traffic was down 1.9 percent, to 2.2 million tons.
European volumes also decreased 1.9 percent compared to January 1998, to
about 819,000 tons.
   By contrast, traffic at Asian airports increased 4 percent, to 1.06
million tons. Very high growth rates were recorded in Shanghai (49
percent), Taipei (19 percent) and Seoul (11 percent).
