WWL, DB Cargo to develop multi-modal logistics hub

The multi-modal logistics hub at the Port of Monfalcone in Italy, will provide solutions to support and manage the total outbound supply chain of vehicle manufacturers in Europe.

Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics (WWL) and DB Cargo signed a contract Thursday to develop the “Mediterranean Hub Monfalcone Srl,” a joint venture multi-modal logistics hub at the Port of Monfalcone on the Italian Adriatic coast, according to a press release issued by WWL.
The new logistics hub, which still needs approval from the German Federal Cartel Office, will provide solutions to support and manage the total outbound supply chain of vehicle manufacturers in Europe, from the factory to distribution points in the Mediterranean and Asia. Logistic solutions that will be provided include outbound vehicle logistics coordination, management of rail operations, terminal services and storage at the port.
WWL will own a 51 percent stake in the business.
“Launching in 2017, this exciting joint venture between Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics and DB Cargo will offer vehicle manufacturers a new, reliable point of exit from Europe and additional transport options to Asia that can reduce overall cargo transport times by more than a week,” said Konrad Kurz, head of land-based operations for EMEA at WWL.
In addition to cars, the Port of Monfalcone handles a variety of goods including China clay, coal, cellulose, cereals, timber, plant systems, various bulk minerals and steel products, according to the port’s website.
