Port of Algeciras exceeds 2.5-million-TEU throughput
The port of Algeciras Bay in southern Spain lifted its container throughput 13 percent last year from 2.2 million to 2.5 million TEUs.
The port also increased its total cargo traffic 10 percent last year to 60.8 million tons, double the figure of a decade ago.
Import containers improved 39 percent in 2003 while export boxes rose 31 percent.
In February, the port of Algeciras Bay opened the Terminal de Contenedores de Algeciras terminal on the Isla Verde quay. The new terminal has an operating capacity to handle more than 500,000 TEUs.
