Calexico is FAST capable

Tom Ridge, U.S. secretary of homeland security, and Mexican Interior Secretary Santiago Creel formally opened dedicated FAST cargo lanes at the Calexico, Calif., port of entry.

FAST, or Free and Secure Trade Lanes, is a program that combines advance electronic submission of shipping documents with onboard transponders linking the truck to the shipment and allowing those that receive a green light for customs and security compliance to continue through without waiting for paperwork processing.

The program was designed to help ease border delays for qualified truckers and shippers, as well as improve security by checking cargo data for potential threats or contraband.

Calexico is the sixth southern border port of entry since the program began in October to dedicate a FAST lane. The programs are typically up and running before the official dedication ceremonies. The Calexico port of entry has enrolled almost 500 qualified drivers, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
