AIRBORNE FREIGHT REPORTS SECOND-QUARTER LOSS
Airborne Inc. the holding company for Airborne Freight, reported a second quarter loss of $6.4 million, compared to net earnings of $13.8 million for the year-earlier period.
The Seattle-based company said its losses narrowed, compared to the $17.0-million loss reported in the first quarter, due to implemented cost control efforts, including reductions in work force and reductions and combining of flight segments.
The second-quarter results include a one-time gain on the sale of radio frequencies of $1.4 million and a one-time severance and restructuring charge of $1.9 million after tax.
Airborne's operating loss for the second quarter was $2.3 million, including a one-time severance and restructuring charge of $2.9 million. Operating income for the second quarter of 2000 was $25.3 million. Revenues for the second quarter were flat, at $812 million. Domestic revenues rose 0.5 percent while international revenues decreased 2.9 percent.
