Weyerhaeuser unit starts service between Long Beach and Canada
Westwood Shipping Line, the commercial marine subsidiary of Weyerhaeuser Co., a major integrated forest products company, has begun a coastal shipping service between the port of Long Beach, Calif., and ports in British Columbia.
The 'Westwood Pomona' will make round-trip voyages between British Columbia and Long Beach carrying cargo for Weyerhaeuser and other companies. This 10,200-gross-ton ship, a freight side loader — also known as a 'sto-ro' — is one of seven vessels in Westwood Shipping's fleet.
'Ground transportation is becoming increasingly challenging due to congestion and higher costs. By offering a new and competitive way to transport cargo by sea, we're making available a strong logistics alternative with cost, reliability and environmental benefits,' said Craig Lawrence, president of Westwood Shipping Line.
