DHL starts work on new East Coast hub

DHL broke ground Tuesday on a new East Coast distribution center in Allentown, Pa., part of a $1.2 billion U.S. network expansion announced last year by the express parcel carrier.

The new distribution hub will cost $107 million and is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2006, DHL said. The 500,000-square-foot, two-level facility will be equipped with the latest sorting technology, enabling it to handle 40,000 letters and 50,000 parcels per hour.

DHL is racing to put a full-scale ground network in place to compete throughout the United States with UPS and FedEx, but faces many operational and financial challenges.
