Fraser River port first quarter cargo up 13%
The Fraser River Port, second-largest in British Columbia, said first quarter cargo throughput increased 13 percent to 9.02 million tons.
Container volumes increased 34 percent to 95,353 TEUs, of which 44,754 were exports and 50,599 were imports.
Lumber shipments, up 148 percent to 136,532 tons in the first quarter, boosted exports. Top imports were steel, up 43 percent to 267,415 tons, and automobiles, up 11 percent to 117,776 units.
There were 180 ship arrivals at the Fraser River port in the first quarter, a two percent increase over the first quarter of 2004. Domestic short-sea shipping cargo volumes rose 14 percent to 7.59 million tons.
