Inland Marine Underwriters release cargo-specific guides
The Inland Marine Underwriters Association (IMUA) has released six newly published guides offering specific information on various types of containerized cargo.
The six types of containers include general-purpose dry cargo, refrigerated, ventilated, flat rack, open top, and livestock. The guide for each type of conveyance explains characteristics, how values are determined, identifies exposures, provides loss prevention tips, and lists source for additional information.
The IMUA's Loss and Control Claims Committee, led by Barry Ternef of Chubb Marine Underwriters, prepared these guides to assist underwriters, loss control and claims specialists, and other interested parties to more accurately analyze risks and prevent losses, said Ron Thornton, the IMUA president and chief executive officer. 'for example, the guide on refrigerated cargo carrying conveyances notes that a higher degree of maintenance is required, especially if the mechanical equipment is built-in. Non-insurance individuals who operate truck fleets or ship goods and merchandise may also find these guides useful.'
The guides offer numerous tips on how to prevent or mitigate losses. Abstracts of the guides are available at the IMUA Web site, http://www.imua.org.
