Japan hits U.S. steel imports with 15 percent tariffs

Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry Monday said it will impose 15 percent tariffs on U.S. steel imports, starting Sept. 1.

According to an Associated Press report, the tariffs could reach as high as $51 million and will focus on U.S.-made ball bearings, aircraft parts, and other steel products.

The AP said Japan wants the United States to repeal duties it has imposed on Japanese steel products, starting in 1999, under the Byrd Amendment. The World Trade Organization declared the Byrd Amendment unlawful.
