Rotterdam partners with Pelindo I to develop deep sea port in Indonesia

The Port of Rotterdam Authority signed an agreement with the Medan, Indonesia-based port company to conduct a feasibility study on the construction of a new deep water port in Kuala Tanjung.

The Port of Rotterdam Authority signed an agreement with port company Pelindo I to develop a new deep sea port in Kuala Tanjung, Indonesia.
The port authority Medan, Indonesian-based Pelindo I will first conduct a feasibility study on the construction of the new deep water port via a joint organization that will be based in Rotterdam. Upon completion of the study, the Port of Rotterdam Authority said it would then decide if it will agree to further pursue development of the port.
The Port of Kuala Tanjung would be located near the city of Medan on the Strait of Malacca. Port of Rotterdam Authority said in a statement that strengthening Indonesia’s maritime sector to promote economic growth of 6 percent to 7 percent has been a primary objective for President Joko Widodo and Kuala Tanjung is one of the most important and high-profile projects aimed at achieving that goal.
For the authority, “development of a deep sea port in Indonesia is consistent with the Port Authority’s foreign policy that, among other things, is focused on creating opportunities for Dutch companies abroad,” it said.
“Participation in port development in countries that are of interest to the port is one of the ways in which to achieve this. This is why, in 2003, the Port Authority signed a joint venture with the Sultan of Oman – Sohar Industrial Port Company – for the development of the Port of Sohar, and also why it is focusing on developing Porto Central in Brazil.”
“We want to share our knowledge in the construction, development and management of Kuala Tanjung,” Port of Rotterdam Authority CEO Allard Castelein said of the agreement. “We are confident that the Port Authority and Pelindo I will form a strong team that will serve the country and provide for a better future.”
