BUSH SEEKS $1.5 BILLION MORE FOR HOMELAND SECURITY

President George W. Bush has submitted a wartime supplemental budget of $74.7 billion to Congress, of which $1.5 billion would “support expanded operations of the Department and Homeland Security and Operation Liberty Shield,” the White House said in a statement.

“These funds support Coast Guard forces deployed … to protect our ports,” the White House explained, as well as “resources for border and transportation security, including additional screening of visitors crossing the border and increased inspection of high-risk goods and cargo” in ports.

The lion’s share of the supplemental budget, $62.6 billion, was earmarked to support military action “both in Iraq and in other operations relating to the war on terror,” the White House said.
